Jon B. Eisenberg is a widely published author on appellate matters. A former partner in California's largest appellate law firm, Horvitz & Levy, LLP, he has three decades of experience in appellate litigation.  He is principal co-author of the leading treatise on California appellate procedure (The Rutter Group's "California Practice Guide: Civil Appeals and Writs"). He has argued dozens of cases in the California Courts of Appeal and Ninth Circuit and 10 cases in the California Supreme Court.  In 2008, Mr. Eisenberg was named one of the top 100 Northern California "Super Lawyers" and the Los Angeles Daily Journal listed him as one of the top 100 lawyers in all of California.

 

William N. Hancock is formerly of counsel to Horvitz & Levy, LLP.  He has devoted his entire career to appellate law. He spent 16 years as a Law Clerk and Senior Staff Attorney in the First and Sixth Appellate Districts of the California Court of Appeal, where he worked with a broad range of judges.  In 2001, Mr. Hancock returned to private practice as an attorney with Horvitz & Levy, LLP.  In 2004 he established his own appellate practice, The Hancock Law Office, in San Francisco, and joined with Mr. Eisenberg to form Eisenberg and Hancock, LLP in 2006.  In 2009, Mr. Hancock was selected as a Northern California "Super Lawyer" in the field of appellate law.

PLANNING AND CONSERVATION LEAGUE V. CASTAIC LAKE WATER AGENCY 12/17/09 ___Cal.App.4th ___; Second Dist., Div. Four (successfully defended appeal and prosecuted cross-appeal to obtain judgment denying a writ of madate challenging an EIR for State Water Project water transfer).
 
CALIFORNIA WATER IMPACT NETWORK, INC. v. CASTAIC LAKE WATER AGENCY 4/20/09  2009 WL1039679; Second Dist., Div. Five; unpublished decision (as co-counsel with Horvitz & Levy obtained full affirmance of judgment approving EIR for water purchase project). 
 
NORTH COAST WOMEN'S CARE MEDICAL GROUP, INC. V. SUPERIOR COURT (BENITEZ) 8/18/08  2008 WL 3822791; California Supreme Court (co-counsel with Jennifer C. Pizer of Lambda Legal; reversal of Court of Appeal judgment; right of religious freedom does not exempt physicians from state civil rights law prohibiting discrimination based on sexual orientation).
 
CLARK V. OPTICAL COATING LAB, INC. (2008) 165 Cal.App.4th 150 (as appellate counsel for trial lawyers in toxic tort suit, obtained full reversal of $1.15 million in sanctions imposed against trial counsel).
 
SAHADI V. SCHEAFFER (2007) 155 Cal.App.4th 704 (full reversal of judgment barring attorney malpractice suit on statute of limitations defense).

FAIR V. BAKHTIARI (2006) 40 Cal.4th 189 (co-counsel with Arthur Shartsis, Shartsis, Friese & Ginsburg; reversal of Court of Appeal judgment; arbitration clause in draft of tentative settlement terms produced during mediation did not make draft admissible to prove binding and enforceable settlement).

KIBLER V. NORTHERN INYO COUNTY LOCAL HOSPITAL DISTRICT (2006) 39 Cal.4th 192 (affirmance of judgment that anti-SLAPP statute applies to lawsuits arising from proceedings before hospital physician peer review committees).

MOONEY V. CASPARI (2006) 138 Cal.App.4th 704 (full reversal of $1.5 million legal malpractice judgment with directions to enter judgment in favor of appellants).

CALIFORNIA WATER NETWORK V. CASTAIC LAKE WATER AGENCY 3/23/06; Second Dist., Div. 6; unpublished decision; 2006 WL 726882 (full affirmance of judgment approving negative declaration in CEQA matter).

VARIAN MEDICAL SYSTEMS, INC. V. DELFINO (2005) 35 Cal.4th 180 (anti-SLAPP case resulting in reversal of judgment awarding damages and injunctive relief arising from internet speech).

ENGLAND V. SWINERTON BUILDERS 8/29/05; First Dist., Div. Four; unpublished decision; 2005 WL 2065297 (full reversal of $20 million verdict in construction accident case).

SCHIAVO EX REL. SCHINDLER V. SCHIAVO (11th Cir. 2005) 403 F.3d 1223, 1261, 1289; BUSH V. SCHIAVO (Fla. 2004) 885 So.2d 321 (Mr. Eisenberg was a member of the legal team that assisted Terri Schiavo's husband in his successful 2004 challenge to "Terri's Law" in the Florida Supreme Court and in successfully resisting the 2005 efforts in federal court to force resumption of her life support).
